One of the criteria for middle school language arts is that each student read 4 books per quarter.  With four semesters per year, you’ll need to read 16 books this year.  Four of the books need to be a non-fiction book including (but not limited to) how-to books, sports stories, biographies and autobiographies.  One of those books must be a Christian biography or autobiography.  Four books need to be a Classic or Newbery winner book.   I have a list of the Newbery winners and the Librarian has a list to choose from as well.  The remainder of the 8 books need to be fiction including historical fiction, science fiction, or anything that you choose.  When you have finished reading your book, you will need to fill out a Book Response Form found in my class or on the CCS website.  The reason for this requirement is because we don’t have much time in class to read independently, and reading at home will be an ongoing homework assignment.  You will be reading two novels during the year (one in the first half and one in the second half) and you can use those as part of your reading requirement.  You may also use one book that you read over the summer.  One last thing, the book you read will need to be over 75 pages for 6th grade, 100 pages for 7th and over 125 pages for 8th grade, but if a student reads a book that is over 300 pages, I will count it as two books (but just once per quarter).  Four book response forms are due each quarter and are worth 10 points each.
